Let’s talk about six of the most devastating conflicts going on in the world today and how they’re pushing an unprecedented number of people into severe hunger. And it’s the number one cause of hunger in the world, tearing families, communities, infrastructure, food systems and entire regions apart. As Map 5-1 and Figure 5-1 show, since World War II, and at present, armed conflicts involved countries and peoples from all over the globe.Conflict ravages countries in countless ways. By some accounts, close to 15,000 violent clashes between different groups have occurred over recorded history, with about six hundred significant _s taking place since the year 1500. According to John Keegan, in the History of Warfare, while the particular features and practices of _ have varied according to the particular historical and societal contexts in which it occurred, it is a universal phenomenon crossing space and time. However, even though _ is relatively rare (thank goodness) given the number of states and national groups in world politics that could be fighting with each other at any given time, armed clashes of varying scope and size have been a regular feature in international relations and armed conflict continues to occur around the world. It is (happily) true that most conflicts among the players of world politics are resolved without resort to violence. ![]() Even the most optimistic observer of world politics would have to concede that conflict and _ are persistent patterns of world politics. ![]()
